Sustainable Farming

Regenerative Sustainable Farming

The general perception of this concept is a ‘new thing’ but all it mimics is how farmers farmed some 60 years ago before they were told that all these new chemical fertilizers, animal drench, herbicides & pesticides would be great inputs for bigger profits. What it didn’t tell them how much it would really cost them as nothing went into soil health only to help destroy the soil microbes at a rapid rate – the desertification of the landscape.

There is so much diversity of information out there on this topic of Regenerative Agriculture from YouTube Vlogs, TED talks, books and movies such as Regarians film titled “POLYFACES – A world of many choices” documenting the Salatin family farm Polyface over 4 years and the impact it has made not only on its own landscape but that of a neighboring farm who adopted their system.

over 4 years and the impact it has made not only on its own landscape but that of a neighboring farm who adopted their system.

Joel Salatin has written many outstanding books on the topic and on low cost, portable infrastructure so too has Gabe Brown written a book titled “From Dirt to Soil’. Then there is Alan Savory who is recognized globally for his holistic agriculture work.

There is a mountain of information provided by these three men illustrated by what they have already achieved.

We all need to take stock of what we are doing to our soils.
